The received wisdom is that defending deep invites pressure, and pressure becomes goals. The match performance data says something more precise: defending deep invites shots, and shots are not the same thing as chances. A team can sit back, surrender 18 attempts, and still win the expected-goals battle - if those 18 attempts come from low-value positions.

The next time a side parks the bus and the shot count runs against them, resist the broadcast framing. Look at where the shots are coming from, and look at the cumulative xG line. A flat-but-steady climb against a deep block is not a team battering the door down. It is a team being managed into exactly the shots their opponent is happy to concede.
